Holistic, person-centred support can lead to lasting change
With the help of Barons Court Project, Vic has moved from a place of uncertainty and grief to one of stability, community involvement, and personal ambition.
Background
Vic first came to the Barons Court Project in 2010, seeking a change of environment and support during a difficult time. Struggling with mental health challenges and homelessness, he was referred through word of mouth by former guests of the project. At the time, he was living in a mental health hostel and feeling uncertain about his future housing situation. Shortly after joining the project, he experienced the significant loss of his mother, adding bereavement to his already complex support needs.
Support Needs
Vic presented with a range of support needs, including:
- Mental health support
- Housing assistance
- Social isolation
- Bereavement support
Achievements
Hard Outcomes:
- Secured stable housing in 2015 through advocacy by Barons Court Project staff, who liaised with local services and housing providers on his behalf.
- Continues to engage with the Claybrook Mental Health Team for ongoing clinical support.
Soft Outcomes:
- Improved confidence and motivation through regular participation in social activities and creative groups.
- Increased community involvement, including volunteering at the project and sharing his talents in music and gardening.
- Maintained stability and stayed out of hospital, despite ongoing mental health challenges.
Role of Barons Court Project
Barons Court Project has played a pivotal role in Vic’s journey. Support workers advocated for him during his housing transition, resulting in a successful move to a housing association flat. Over the years, Vic has participated in numerous social and creative groups including cooking, art, physical activities, and day trips. These have been instrumental in boosting his confidence and maintaining his mental well-being.
He has also contributed back to the community, volunteering for the project by helping with the garden and performing music at fundraising and community events. The support team continues to assist him with housing and benefits queries, such as helping him migrate benefits or communicate with the council.
Looking Ahead
Vic remains ambitious and active within the community. His current aspirations include:
- Advocating for the continued operation of the Ellerslie Centre
- Pursuing his passion for music, with hopes that his work will gain international recognition
- Staying engaged with organisations such as AgeUK, Sound Minds, and Key Changes
- Maintaining a strong support network
- Establishing a music group at the Lyric Theatre or Riverside Studios
Continuing to focus on his physical health and fitness by attending the gym regularly

We see the support we provide as a continuous journey
Bebe had been sleeping in a tent for four years, unable to access benefits due to his EUSS pre-settled status and limited work history in the UK. He was destitute, suffering from back pain, high blood pressure, and missing teeth, which made eating difficult. His limited English and social isolation worsened his depression.
Barons Court Project supported Bebe by providing meals, showers, laundry, clothing, and access to medical care. We referred him to a dentist, GP, and specialist clinics, ensuring he received treatment, dentures, and necessary screenings. He also participated in social activities like bowling, table tennis, and a Chelsea FC tour, which improved his mental well-being.
Through housing support, we helped him submit a homelessness application, liaised with his outreach worker, and secured temporary accommodation. Eventually, he was offered a private rental studio in Richmond with tenancy support. We also assisted with his EUSS application, gathering evidence of residency, which led to him being granted settled status and eligibility for public funds.
Now receiving Universal Credit, Bebe is focused on sustaining his tenancy and achieving financial stability. He continues to engage with support services and social activities, helping him build confidence and a sense of belonging.
